Learn more about the city of Barrie and surrounding areas

Simcoe County's City of Barrie is one of Canada's fastest growing and dynamic cities. With a population of just under 200,000 Barrie offers its residents easy access to the serenity of Ontario's wilderness and the vibrancy of the GTA. The city's growing population is quite varied, making it home to a mixed bag of diverse cultures.

Barrie grew from the shores of Kempenfelt Bay with the historical town centre located on the edge of its waters. Away from the water, quiet and modern suburban neighbourhoods are situated along Highway 400, which connects Barrie to Toronto. Don't drive? Not an issue as both the Allendale GO Station and the Barrie South GO Station carry commuters south into the GTA with the line terminating at Toronto's Union Station.

Several parks line beautiful Kempenfelt Bay offering miles of biking, rollerblading and walking trails that pass through Military Heritage Park, Allendale Beach Park, Centennial Beach, the Barrie Marina, onto Johnson's Beach. The route also passes by one of the most iconic structures in Barrie: The Spirit Catcher, a twenty ton, 25-meter-tall steel sculpture. Lake Simcoe also offers many other opportunities for recreation such as fishing (in both the winter and the summer) and boatin

You can find many cultural attractions including the Gryphon Theatre, the MacLaren Art Centre, Grey and Simcoe Foresters Museum, and just outside the city you can take a step back in time at the Simcoe County Museum. Looking for something more exciting? You can take in one of the many restaurants, bars and nightlife in Barrie's downtown or head a little south of Barrie to Georgian Downs to watch the horse races or take your chances at the casino.

Barrie is home to the largest hospital in the Simcoe Muskoka region, Royal Victoria Hospital. RVH has been caring for the community since 1897 when the very first four-bed hospital opened in Barrie. In 2012 they opened a $450 million expansion that doubled the size of the building and were awarded Stroke Distinction in 2019. The strategic and continued growth to make RVH a world class facility is an endeavor we whole heartedly and financially support.

Our city is home to a 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art public library, located in Downtown Barrie at the junction of Worsley and Owen Street. Barrie Public Library is open 7 days a week and houses a multimedia collection that serves residents of all ages in the City of Barrie. Alongside usual library services the library also offers free Internet access to patrons, plus a wide variety of adult and children's programs. Information Barrie is a service of the Barrie Public Library, providing information about community groups, agencies, government offices, churches, daycare, schools and more.

The last few years have seen Barrie's population grow substantially as more people started to recognize that the city is the gateway to Lake Huron, the Bruce Peninsula, and Northern Ontario, with The Greater Toronto Area only an hour's drive to the south. Just as it was in its earliest history, Barrie is still situated on the threshold between the woodland and lakeside playgrounds of Ontario's cottage country and the economic heart of Toronto. These factors, among others, make Barrie an ideal place for a family to thrive.

With warmer days finally here, it’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy everything our community has to offer. Trails across Barrie and Simcoe County are reopening, making it easy to head out for a walk, a bike ride, or simply take in a quiet moment in nature.

Whether you’re looking for something scenic, family-friendly, or a bit more active, here are a few local favourites worth exploring.

Ardagh Bluffs (Barrie)

One of Barrie’s most loved trail systems, Ardagh Bluffs offers over 17 km of interconnected trails winding through mature forest. You’ll find a mix of flat paths and gentle hills, making it great for both casual walkers and those looking for a bit more of a workout.
In spring, the area comes alive with birds, fresh greenery, and that quiet “escape” feeling — all just minutes from residential neighbourhoods.

Good to know: multiple access points, dog-friendly (on leash), some sections can be muddy in early spring.

Wilkins Walk Trail (Barrie Waterfront)

Set right along Kempenfelt Bay, this trail is all about views and accessibility. It’s fully paved, flat, and ideal for strollers, bikes, and casual walks.
You can easily turn this into a longer outing by connecting to Barrie’s waterfront paths, stopping at parks, beaches, or even grabbing a coffee downtown.

Good to know: very accessible, busy in warmer months, perfect for sunrise or sunset walks.

Nine Mile Portage Heritage Trail (Springwater)

This trail combines natural beauty with local history. Once used as an Indigenous and early settler route, it now offers a peaceful path through forests and wetlands.
It’s relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it perfect for a slower-paced walk where you can truly take in the surroundings.

Good to know: interpretive signage along the trail, great for families and history lovers.

Copeland Forest (Oro-Medonte)

A favourite for those looking for a bit more adventure, Copeland Forest offers a network of scenic trails with rolling terrain, forest views, and a true “get away from it all” feel. It’s especially popular for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking, with routes ranging from easy to more challenging.

Good to know: multiple access points, great elevation changes, ideal if you want something a bit more active and less crowded.

Simcoe County Forest - Barr Tract (Snow Valley / Springwater)

A scenic forest trail system with rolling terrain and a peaceful, tucked-away feel. Known for its mix of winding paths and gentle elevation, it’s a great spot for hiking, trail running, and biking when you want something a bit more dynamic than a flat walk.

Good to know: moderate difficulty, some hills, ideal for more active outings, and typically less crowded than the main Barrie trails.

To sum it up, this is the kind of lifestyle that makes living in Barrie and Simcoe County so special . Whether it’s a quick walk after work, a weekend hike, or simply taking a moment to enjoy the fresh air, these trails are right at your doorstep. If you’ve been thinking about getting outside more, this is your sign. And if you’re thinking about making a move, finding a home that connects you to spaces like these can truly change the way you live.

It is easy to hear mixed headlines about the condo market these days. Most of that conversation tends to focus on large urban centres like Toronto or Vancouver, where the dynamics of condo living are very different from what we see here in Barrie.

In bigger cities, condos are often designed as a first step into the market for first time buyers or investors. Units can be smaller and more focused on affordability and density. In Barrie, the story is almost the opposite. Many of our condo communities are built with downsizers, empty nesters, and semi retired homeowners in mind. These buyers are typically moving from larger homes and are looking for a simpler, low maintenance lifestyle without giving up comfort, space, or great views.

That is why Barrie condos often offer more generous layouts, appealing amenities, and sought after locations close to the waterfront, trails, and everyday conveniences. It is a lifestyle driven market that reflects the needs of local homeowners.

The key takeaway is that real estate trends are not one size fits all. While national headlines may suggest challenges in the condo sector, the reality on the ground in Barrie can feel very different. Working with a local expert who understands the buildings, neighbourhoods, and lifestyle opportunities can make all the difference when exploring condo living here.
